Foxconn suspends operation at a facility in India

Foxconn International suspended operations at a mobile phone parts manufacturing facility in India after workers became sick, but it said the incident would not affect its business.

The company said about 250 workers at its facility in the Kancheepuram District of the Tamil Nadu near Chennai ‘experienced sensations of giddiness and nausea’ on July 23 while working in the facility and were treated at a nearby hospital. Most of them were released after treatment, it added.

Foxconn said it suspended operations at the facility as a precautionary measure beginning on Monday to allow the facility to be checked and cleared by local authorities. The company expects production at the facility to resume in about one week.

‘The company believes that the incident may have been caused by the routine spraying of pesticide at the production facility, but all possible causes are being investigated by the relevant local authorities in India,’ the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong bourse late on Monday.

Foxconn International one of Hon Hai Precision’s subsidiaries and maker of Apple’s iPhone among other products, had said in June that it would seek higher prices from clients to help offset wages increase at a plant in southern China that has been hit by a series of suicides.
